As You Like It
As You Like It

If you see a sonnet dangled from a limb
Or the tenderly carved name of "Rosalind"
In the bark of a tree in your city park
During Rochesterfest sometime around dark...

Or if you hear sweet wooing amongst the bushes,
A bleating and baaing, a guffawing and mushiness
Of shepherds and shepherdesses it's safe to know
It's Celia, Oliver, Rosalind and Orlando.

More! If you don't believe in love at first sight,
You'd better go into the forest that night
And taste of the Master Bard's whimsical wit
Played by a traveling troupe, just "As You Like It".

* Groundling: a person who frequented the Globe Theatre in the early 17th century and was too poor to pay to sit on one of the three levels of the theatre. For a penny, they could stand in "the pit" (also called "the yard") just below the stage to watch the play. Standing in the pit was uncomfortable, and people were usually packed in tightly. Groundlings were commoners who were also referred to as stinkards or penny-stinkers. They were known to misbehave and to even throw food such as fruit and nuts at characters they did not like.

Bringing a tradition enjoyed world-wide to Rochester, Words Players Theatre will present its third annual Shakespeare in the Park event in June as a part of Rochesterfest.
